What does the day look like?
Between 35% and 40% of your working day is spent on live acoustic data acquisition aboard a survey vessel. You monitor planned survey lines using acquisition software like QPS QINSy, HYPACK, or Teledyne PDS, deploy Valeport SWiFT SVP sound velocity profilers through the water column, track acoustics via Sonardyne USBL, and log raw returns from multibeam echo sounders (Norbit WINGHEAD, Kongsberg EM 2040, Teledyne RESON SeaBat T50), side-scan sonars (Klein 4900, Edgetech 4200), and sub-bottom profilers (Innomar SES-2000). Another 15% to 20% involves sensor mobilization, mounting GNSS antennas, and running calibration patch tests at sea against Applanix POS MV or Kongsberg Seapath inertial systems.
Offline data cleaning and quality control take 30% to 35% of the day: filtering acoustic noise, applying tidal corrections, adjusting sound velocity profiles, and building digital terrain models (DTM) in QPS Qimera, CARIS HIPS and SIPS, SonarWiz, or EIVA NaviSuite. The remaining 10% to 15% goes to compiling GIS deliverables, pipeline inspection logs, and client reports. Offshore operations require 12-hour shifts 7 days a week, working rotations such as 28 days on / 28 days off, 4 weeks on / 4 weeks off, or 6 weeks on / 6 weeks off. Onshore office roles follow a standard 40-hour work week (8 hours per day, 5 days per week).
