What does the day look like?
A Video Game QA Tester isolates, reproduces, and documents software defects in unreleased builds across personal computers, consoles, and mobile devices. Leisure gaming accounts for 0 percent of the workday; 100 percent of the shift is spent executing repetitive test scripts, checking collision boundaries, and running regression checks. Testers log structured defect tickets into Jira, Hansoft, Bugzilla, and TestRail, detailing reproduction steps, reproduction rates (such as 5/5 or 2/10), and severity levels. Hardware involves platform development hardware such as the PlayStation 5 DevKit, Xbox Series X Development Kit, and Nintendo Switch Development Kit to verify platform rules like Sony TRC, Microsoft XR, and Nintendo Lotcheck.
Standard employment is 40 hours per week across an 8-hour shift. During project milestones like Alpha, Beta, or Day-1 patch submission, mandatory overtime (crunch) expands working hours to 50 to 60 hours per week, including evenings and weekends. Third-party testing vendors such as Keywords Studios and Testronic operate continuous morning, evening, and overnight shifts.
