What does the day look like?
Financial and operational management takes up 40% of the day: reviewing monthly Profit and Loss (P&L) statements, operating cash flow, burn rate, office leases, and software licensing contracts using Microsoft Excel, NetSuite, Workday, BambooHR, Google Workspace, Jira, and Confluence. Another 25% goes to publisher and investor relations, including milestone funding negotiations with Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Valve, as well as quarterly business reviews. Department leadership and culture management (hiring and mentoring Art, Audio, Technical, and Production Directors) accounts for 20% of your time.
The creative review portion that teenagers often picture takes only 15% of the schedule. This involves evaluating vertical slice demos and release windows; it includes zero hands-on coding, 3D modeling, or level design. Work runs 45 to 60 hours per week without factory shifts or overnight rosters, though early-morning and late-evening video calls across time zones are frequent during audits and major milestone reviews.
