What does the day look like?
Your day runs around one or several children's food, sleep, hygiene and safety. Through the day you read picture books aloud, set up sensory play, fine and gross motor activities and arts and crafts, take children to parks, libraries, toddler groups, swimming lessons or preschool, push multi-position strollers and handle ISOFIX and LATCH car seats. You keep nap schedules, soothe distress, give prescribed oral medication only with written parental authorization, take temperatures, log feeding volumes, diaper wet and soiled status, nap times and milestones in Huckleberry, Baby Tracker, Brightwheel, Tadpoles, Sprout Baby or a WhatsApp family group, and brief parents at handoff.
Play and park walks are only about 30% of the day. The other 70% is physical labor, sanitisation and constant vigilance: spilled food, soiled diapers, tantrums, children's laundry, sanitising high chairs, teething rings and toys, enforcing naps and preventing choking, falls, burns and traffic danger. A standard live-out week is 50 hours, 08:00 to 18:00, Monday to Friday. A live-in nanny works 50 to 60 hours per week, often with 1 to 2 evenings of babysitting included. A night nanny works 10 to 12 hours per night, for example 20:00 to 08:00.
