What does the day look like?
You start the day in the bedroom and bathroom: assisted bathing, showering, oral care, dressing, emptying catheter bags, changing incontinence briefs, applying barrier cream. Then lifting: ceiling track hoists, mobile hydraulic lifters, a Sara Stedy aid, slide sheets, positioning the wheelchair and locking it in the van with a 4-point tie-down. At meals you follow IDDSI Level 0 to Level 7 textures, watch swallowing to prevent choking, and flush PEG feeding tubes. For communication you use AAC devices, PECS binders, Makaton prompts and Tobii Dynavox tablets. You finish with MAR sign-offs and shift notes in ShiftCare or Birdie.
Outings, games and chat are 20% to 30% of the shift. The other 70% to 80% is lifting, hygiene, feeding, cleaning and logging. Work runs 24/7 on 8-hour or 12-hour rosters: 07:00–15:00, 14:30–22:30, 22:00–07:00 nights or sleepovers. Strain on the spine is high and contact with bodily fluids is routine.
