What does the day look like?
As a shift leader you do direct care plus supervision of the shift. Most of the day is personal care: bathing, feeding, toileting, mobility support, medication rounds including controlled drugs, and recording them. Your tools are ordinary: hoists, profiling beds, pressure-relief mattresses, glucometers, continence and mobility aids, not diagnostic instruments. The rest is leading the shift: allocating work, supervising junior staff, developing and reviewing care plans, running handover, monitoring pressure-area prevention, nutrition and infection control, keeping clinical records, receiving relatives and professionals, and taking the first decision on incidents before escalation.
In Korian homes in France records are kept in Netsoins, in German homes care documentation is in DAN touch, and in United Kingdom homes rostering and electronic handover tools are used. Roughly 50% to 70% of a shift is direct care and medication rounds, the part you imagine, and 30% to 50% is rostering, documentation, supervision, family communication and incident reports. Work is rostered shifts including nights, weekends and public holidays. Korian timetables cite 1 weekend in 2 worked with 12-hour amplitudes; United Kingdom adverts cite day shifts, lates and earlies with on-call cover for staffing gaps.
