What does the day look like?
You work at a desk, in an office or hybrid, 37.5 to 45 hours per week. About 15% of the day is technical talk with inventors, scientists and engineers — the part teenagers imagine. The other 85% is painstaking written work: you draft patent specifications of 20 to 60 pages with precise claim sets, answer examiners’ search and rejection letters in writing, search prior art in Clarivate Derwent Innovation, Questel Orbit Intelligence, LexisNexis TotalPatent One, Google Patents and Espacenet, and write FTO and invalidity opinions on competitor patents.
You track every deadline in CPA Global (Clarivate), AppColl, Patricia, Equinox or Anaqua, file through MyEPO Portfolio / EPO Online Filing (CMS), USPTO Patent Center and WIPO ePCT, and format in Microsoft Word with claim-numbering macros. There are 0 night shifts and 0 on-call duties, but response windows of 2, 4 or 6 months are absolute in law — a missed date kills the right with no recovery, so filing weeks run hot. You bill time in 6-minute units. Sometimes you defend a client at oral proceedings before the EPO Opposition Divisions or Boards of Appeal.
