What does the day look like?
For 10% of the day you imagine meeting inventors and inspecting prototypes of quantum computers, oncology drugs or robotics. For the remaining 90% you work at a desk with documents: you search prior art in Espacenet, Google Patents, PatBase and Derwent Innovation, check whether an invention is novel and inventive, and write the technical description and legal claims in strict formal patent prose.
Daily work means answering office actions from the EPO, the UK IPO or the USPTO, amending claim wording, corresponding with foreign IP firms, and reviewing competitor claims line by line for Freedom to Operate opinions. From 10% to 20% of each week goes to legal study and exam preparation: reading case law and reviewing mock papers with a supervising partner. Tools: USPTO Patent Public Search, STNext, Orbit Intelligence, Anaqua, CPA Global / Clarivate, AppColl, Equinox, Microsoft Word, DeepL Pro, EPO Patent Translate. Hours are 09:00 to 17:30 or 18:00, Monday to Friday, with 0 night shifts and 0 on-call duties, with overtime peaks before responses with 2-month or 4-month non-extendable deadlines.
