What does the day look like?
Working hours are typically 37.5 to 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 08:30 to 17:00. While many imagine spending the whole day in an armchair listening to clients, direct psychotherapy accounts for only 20% to 30% of the time, reserved strictly for complex, high-risk cases that junior staff cannot handle.
The remaining 70% to 80% of the day consists of administrative governance: 30% to 40% goes to clinical supervision and casework audits with therapists, 25% to 35% to clinical governance, record audits, and intake triage, and 5% to 10% to handling acute crises like suicide risks or child protection. Daily work relies on EHR platforms like SimplePractice, Epic Systems, Cerner, CareNotes, and Cliniko, psychometrics such as PHQ-9, GAD-7, and MMPI-3, and telehealth tools like Doxy.me and Zoom for Healthcare. Rotating on-call duty covers 1 evening per week or 1 weekend per month for crisis escalations.
