What does the day look like?
A Clinical Director does not spend the day conducting back-to-back 50-minute therapy sessions. Direct patient contact and complex case consultations take up roughly 10% to 20% of the working time, while 80% to 90% is consumed by administrative, operational, regulatory, and financial management.
Daily work includes chairing clinical review boards, evaluating critical incidents like patient self-harm, running supervision for licensed therapists, and managing operating budgets. Daily software includes EHR and practice management systems like Epic Systems, Cerner, SimplePractice, Kareo, EMIS Health, or SystmOne, incident tracking on Datix, financial tools like QuickBooks and SAP ERP, and Microsoft Power BI dashboards. The standard shift runs Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 17:30 (about 40 to 45 hours per week), accompanied by 24/7 on-call availability on designated rotation schedules for acute psychiatric emergencies and clinical escalations.
