What does the day look like?
Around 60–80% of the shift is spent handling inbound phone calls, web chats, or text messages. Core duties involve active listening, risk screening, emotional de-escalation, signposting referrals, and logging call notes into the centre CRM. Under the Samaritans model, the rule is to listen without advising or treating. Paid roles at the US 988 network add structured Suicide Safety Assessments and follow-up contacts.
The remaining 20–40% covers shift handovers, debriefs, peer support, mandatory CPD, logging statistics, and quality checks. The service runs 24/7. Samaritans UK requires 3–4 hours/week plus a night shift every 4–8 weeks. UK NHS helplines run rotating rotas including nights. Germany's TelefonSeelsorge requires 12 hours/month with mandatory night shifts, and Lifeline Australia sets a minimum of 4 hours/fortnight post-training.
