What does the day look like?
Direct client contact accounts for 50% to 60% of the working week, typically 18 to 25 clinical hours. You conduct 45 to 50-minute therapy sessions using modalities like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or Psychodynamic Therapy, alongside intake assessments with standardized tools like the PHQ-9, GAD-7, PCL-5, and C-SSRS.
The remaining 40% to 50% of the day consists of administrative tasks rather than talk therapy. You must enter progress notes in SOAP, DAP, or BIRP formats within 24 to 48 hours into Electronic Health Record systems such as SimplePractice, TherapyNotes, Jane App, Theranest, or Epic Systems. You also coordinate care with physicians, manage billing, and attend 1 hour per week (or 4 hours per month) of mandatory supervision to review recorded sessions and signed logs. Private practice shifts often include evenings and weekends, while crisis clinics involve rotating on-call telephone triage.
