What does the day look like?
The day centers on physical handling, infection control, and routine charting rather than psychological counselling. Direct, guided therapy practice occupies only 15% to 20% of a shift. The remaining 80% to 85% consists of heavy physical transfers, equipment sanitization, and personal hygiene support.
Daily tasks involve moving patients between beds, wheelchairs, and gymnasiums using Arjo or Invacare mechanical hoists, slide sheets, and transfer boards. You disinfect parallel bars, plinths, and standing frames between sessions using Clinell biocidal wipes. Following written plans from supervising physiotherapists or occupational therapists, you assist with gait training, balance exercises, and Activities of Daily Living such as dressing or safe food preparation. You also measure vital signs and log notes into EHR platforms like Epic Systems, Cerner, SystemOne, or EMIS Health. Inpatient units run 24/7 on rotational early (07:00 to 15:30), late (13:30 to 22:00), and night shifts (21:30 to 07:30).
