What does the day look like?
Standard hours run from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday, totaling 30 to 35 hours per week. There is no shift work, night work, or on-call duty. Contracts cover 38 to 40 weeks per calendar year during school terms only, meaning school holidays are unpaid.
Instructional and physical support beside an assigned student takes 50% of the day, repeating teacher directions and scribing for dysgraphia. Another 20% is spent on behavioral redirection and de-escalating emotional meltdowns in quiet rooms using tools like visual schedules and noise-canceling headphones. Administrative duties take 15%, including photocopying, laminating flashcards, and logging notes in systems like CPOMS or Arbor. The remaining 15% goes to supervising recess in all weather, lunch queues, bus arrivals, and assisting with wheelchair mobility or personal care. Although teenagers imagine 80% of the job is psychological counseling, the reality is 0% therapy or testing—which is strictly illegal without a license—and 70% physical and behavioral management.
