What does the day look like?
A studio director's day is primarily about business and firm operations rather than drawing buildings. Roughly 30% of your time is spent on business development, public tenders (RFQ/RFP), and contract negotiations, while 25% goes to cash flow forecasting, project profitability audits, and insurance renewals. Team capacity planning and hiring take 20%, and municipal planning hearings and client relations occupy 15%. Direct design oversight and quality reviews account for only 10% of the working hours.
The role requires 45 to 60 hours per week, with frequent evening client networking, project crunch periods, and travel to project sites. Daily operations rely on management software such as Deltek Vantagepoint, Monograph, BQE Core, QuickBooks Enterprise, Asana, Monday.com, Autodesk Revit, BIM 360, and Bluebeam Revu, alongside AIA, RIBA, and HOAI contractual frameworks.
