What does the day look like?
The day starts in the hot lab: behind lead glass, inside a laminar flow isolator, you elute tracer and assay activity in a dose calibrator (Curie meter), then run daily QA — flood field uniformity checks, centre-of-rotation calibration on SPECT, detector background measurements. Then you place an IV cannula and inject a tracer such as Technetium-99m or Fluorine-18 FDG, supervise uptake rest such as 60 minutes of quiet rest after 18F-FDG, position the patient on PET-CT or SPECT-CT, select the protocol and acquire the scan. You close with Geiger-Müller survey meter and wipe tests for contamination and store radioactive sharps in decay lead bins.
Split: 35% direct scanning and positioning, 25% hot lab elution, preparation, dose assay and waste, 20% patient preparation with cannulation, injection and radiation protection explanation, 20% documentation, QA logs and PACS transfer. Instruments: GE Discovery/Omni, Siemens Biograph and Philips Vereos PET-CT scanners, SPECT-CT gamma cameras, Capintec CRC-55tR calibrator, thyroid uptake probes, Ludlum survey meters; software: GE AW Server, Siemens syngo.via, Hermes Medical Solutions workstation, Epic Radiant and Cerner RIS/PACS. Typically 37.5 to 40 hours per week starting 07:00 or 07:30 because 18F half-life is 110 minutes, rare overnight emergencies, common weekend imaging and on-call for emergency V/Q lung scans.
