What does the day look like?
You work 37.5 to 40 hours per week. Patients are treated from 08:00 to 17:00, so machine checks happen from 06:30 to 08:30, from 17:30 to 21:00, or in weekend slots. You stay on-call for breakdowns or urgent calculations. Your base is the hospital physics room and the treatment rooms with Varian TrueBeam, Varian Halcyon, Elekta Versa HD, Elekta Harmony and Accuray CyberKnife.
40% of the day is plan review: you check 3D-CRT, IMRT, VMAT and SRS/SBRT plans in Varian Eclipse, Elekta Monaco or RaySearch RayStation, and verify them by measurement on Sun Nuclear ArcCHECK or IBA Blue Phantom. 30% is calibration: beam output measurement under IAEA TRS-398 or AAPM TG-51 with PTW MP3 water tanks, Farmer chambers, electrometers and EBT3 film. 15% is radiation protection: shielding assessment, badge dosimeters and protocol audits. 15% is team work: tumour boards with oncologists, records in Varian ARIA or Elekta MOSAIQ, and automation scripts in Python or MATLAB.
