What does the day look like?
You spend the day at PACS — Sectra, GE Centricity or Agfa — opening the next X-ray, CT, MRI or US case, checking the clinical history, spotting pathology and dictating the report in Nuance Dragon Medical One. In CRIS, Epic Radiant or Cerner RadNet you vet requests: whether radiation is justified under IR(ME)R 2017, which contrast protocol fits, and you decline requests that are not justified.
Roster is 08:30 to 17:00, plus compulsory on-call: evenings, weekends and 12 hour overnight shifts covering trauma, acute stroke and emergency abdominal CT. About 20% of the day is complex pathology you imagined, 80% is routine flow: normal chests, follow-up reports, urgent calls from emergency doctors, contrast reactions, comparison with prior scans, plus MDT discussion of cancer staging with surgeons and oncologists and procedures such as fluoroscopy-guided barium studies, ultrasound scans, liver, kidney and lymph node biopsies and drainage catheters.
