What does the day look like?
You spend the day in front of PACS — Sectra, GE Healthcare, Philips, Agfa — reading CT, MRI, X-ray and ultrasound studies and dictating reports with Nuance Dragon Medical One or Philips SpeechExec on 3-megapixel or 5-megapixel calibrated Barco Coronis monitors. Around 60% of hours goes to cross-sectional reporting, 15% to MDT conferences and clinical consultations, 15% to ultrasound, fluoroscopy, biopsies and injections, 10% to protocolling, admin and trainee supervision.
Standard week is 40 hours, 10 Programmed Activities in the UK NHS. Nights and weekends run on rota cover, often 1 in 6 to 1 in 10, with overnight reporting frequently handled through hospital teleradiology networks. You do not operate the scanner: 0% of a consultant day is spent scanning patients, that work sits with radiographers.
