What does the day look like?
About 15% of your day is the part most people imagine: writing trajectory scripts, optimizing paths, and watching multi-axis robot arms move in simulation. Around 40% of your time is spent in noisy, cold, or hot factory halls holding a 1.5-kilogram teach pendant, jogging robots and re-teaching coordinates because a mounting pin shifted by 2 millimetres. Another 25% involves tracing electrical signals, verifying wiring cabinets, and debugging communication bits between the robot controller and the cell master PLC. The remaining 20% goes into writing safety compliance forms under ISO 10218-1/2 and ISO 13849-1, logging coordinate offsets, and saving software backups.
Work runs 38 hours to 40 hours per week during simulation phases, but reaches 50 hours to 60 hours per week during plant commissioning. Tooling shutdowns in automotive plants require 12-hour weekend shifts, night work, and mandatory on-call availability. Junior engineers working for systems integrators spend 50% to 75% of their working time traveling away from home at customer manufacturing plants.
