What does the day look like?
A chief curator does not spend the day only choosing pictures for a wall. You plan acquisition, storage, and exhibition of collections; check registration, cataloguing, and records in systems such as The Museum System, Axiell Collections, Adlib, CollectiveAccess, or PastPerfect; read and write research; and review grant proposals, articles, reports, labels, catalogues, and publicity material.
The job is full-time and mostly on-site. A large part of the week is loans, purchases, insurance, budgets, board papers, staff and intern supervision, fundraising meetings, public events, and negotiations with lenders. Choosing exhibition themes and working on the gallery display is the visible part, but it is a small share of the week. Evenings and weekends happen around openings, events, fundraising, and installation periods, with occasional courier travel accompanying loans.
