What does the day look like?
Only 15% to 20% of the day is the version people imagine: shaping an exhibition idea, choosing works, writing catalogue essays and wall texts, and checking the hang before an opening. The other 80% to 85% is operations: budgets in Microsoft Excel and SAP ERP, timelines in Microsoft Project, loan agreements with foreign museums, government indemnities, copyright clearances, donor dinners, internal committee meetings, and supervising a team.
Collections are tracked in The Museum System (TMS), EMu, Vernon CMS, or KE EMu; condition reports and digital inventories may use Articheck or Collector Systems. A normal institutional week is 37 to 40 hours. During exhibition installation or de-installation, it can become 60 to 70 hours, including late-night hanging, weekend work, and courier travel with high-value crates on cargo planes.
