What does the day look like?
The visible part of the day is leading 60-to-90-minute gallery workshops for school groups, family weekend activities, or evening classes for adults. You use handling collections, audio-visual presentation rigs, digital tablets, and tactile art materials. This is about 30% of the job.
The rest is less visible: writing teachers' packs, activity trails, audio-guide scripts, and worksheets; using Tessitura, Spektrix, Axiell Collections, or EMu for bookings and ticketing; doing risk assessments; coordinating buses and school heads; collecting feedback forms, attendance metrics, and grant reports. Desk work is 50%, and meetings, teacher liaison, and reporting are 20%. Full-time hours are usually 37.5-40 per week, Monday-Friday or Tuesday-Saturday. Weekend workshops are routine, evening events happen 1-3 times per month, and there is no 24-hour on-call duty.
