What does the day look like?
A normal day is usually 08:30–17:00 or 09:00–17:30, Monday to Friday, with a 37 to 40 hours week. The romantic part, such as carefully cleaning an old object or doing small treatment work under supervision, is about 15% of the job.
Most of the day is slower and more exact: 45% is documentation, raking-light photography, Adobe Photoshop condition-mapping layers, and database notes in Axiell Collections, TMS, or PastPerfect. Another 25% is environmental checks with Hanwell EMS or Testo Saveris, IPM insect-trap logs, light and UV tracking; 15% is preparation work such as cutting acid-free mountboard, making phase boxes or book shoes, and using Japanese tissue, Melinex, EVA, or wheat starch paste. You may use Leica S9 series or Zeiss Stemi stereomicroscopes, 365 nm UV torches, micro-vacuums, smoke sponges, hot spatulas, and solvents. Regular night shifts are not normal, but evening or early work can happen during exhibition de-installations, high-value loan couriering, or disaster salvage after flooding, pipe bursts, or roof leaks.
