What does the day look like?
About 15% of the day is the version people imagine: being in a gallery or secure store, inspecting the back of a painting, the underside of a sculpture, bindings, labels, seals, customs marks, inventory numbers, and chalk notes. You may use a UV inspection lamp, magnifying loupe, raking-light rig, or digital micro-camera.
The other 85% is desk-based investigation and documentation. You update records in TMS, EMu, or MuseumPlus; search Lost Art Database, Art Loss Register, Getty Provenance Index Databases, Fold3 / NARA Ardelia Hall Collection records, lootedart.com, and RKDartists / RKDimages; and read 19th-century catalogues, transport manifests, wills, forced-sale declarations, and Vermögenserklärungen. The normal schedule is Monday to Friday, 37 to 40 hours per week. There are no night shifts, but travel to undigitized archives can happen.
