What does the day look like?
A museum director’s day is mostly governance, money and people. You prepare and defend budgets, cultivate donors and sponsors, report to the board of trustees, approve the exhibition and acquisitions programme, sign off loans and insurance, hire and supervise department heads, and represent the museum to ministries, municipalities, press and community groups. Systems named in real postings include The Museum System, CollectionsSpace, MuseumPlus, Blackbaud Raiser's Edge, Altru and Tessitura; CAD exhibition layouts are normally made by designers, not the director.
The glamorous part a teenager imagines, choosing art and hanging rooms, is a small share. Curators do the curation; the director carries the programme, risk and deficit. Hours are standard office hours plus openings, galas, board evenings and weekend events. O*NET says 57% work more than 40 hours, 85% use email every day and 81% hold face-to-face discussions every day. There is no shift roster, but you are on call for building, security, loan and press incidents.
