What does the day look like?
The normal schedule is 37-40 hours a week, Monday to Friday, roughly 09:00-17:30. Your day is built around Collections Management Systems such as Axiell The Museum System (TMS), EMu, GallerySystems, or Qi: checking object records, location data, and rights information. You also look at HVAC telemetry, relative humidity (RH) loggers, and lux level sensors, because the storage vaults and display galleries are your responsibility.
Only about 10% of the job is the visible museum part: seeing rare objects, handling historical artefacts, or attending exhibition openings. The other 90% is spreadsheet budgeting, legal accession documents, CMS database problems, HVAC logs, fine-art transit insurance clauses, and managing registrars, object handlers, conservators, and digital photographers. Night or weekend work happens only for facility emergencies such as leaks or climate-control failure, or during high-stakes exhibition installations.
