What does the day look like?
A normal day starts with opening the gallery, greeting visitors, answering questions about the works on show, handing out price lists and press releases, using a point-of-sale register for catalogues or merchandise, and watching the rooms so people do not touch the art. That front-of-house part takes 30% to 40% of the day.
Another 30% to 40% is administration in Artlogic, Collector Systems, or FileMaker Pro: entering provenance, dimensions, medium, condition notes, and collector contacts. You may generate PDF consignment forms, Certificates of Authenticity, and shipping labels in Adobe InDesign and Microsoft Excel. The glamorous part is about 15%: talking about art with serious collectors or curators. The other 85% is email, database cleaning, vacuuming, tracking packages, monitoring visitors, and serving wine at openings. Standard hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 18:00, 37 to 40 hours per week. Opening receptions can mean evening shifts until 21:00 or 22:00, 1 to 2 times per month. There is no on-call or overnight work.
