What does the day look like?
About 70% to 80% of the day is paperwork and procedure. You screen planning applications against the local development framework and national planning policy, gather census, flood risk, traffic impact, and environmental baseline data, draft committee reports and recommendation memos for senior officers or the municipal board, check architectural plans against zoning ordinances, density limits, and conservation area restrictions, liaise with highways authorities, environmental agencies, and heritage trusts, and log public objections.
About 20% to 30% is drawing and concept work: masterplan sketches, zoning ideas, public consultation boards. Daily tools are Esri ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, AutoCAD, Autodesk Civil 3D, SketchUp, Rhino, Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, plus Idox Uniform, Northgate Planning, Civica, and Accela in US municipalities. Hours are 37.5 to 40 per week in the office, with evening committee meetings, zoning hearings, or community workshops 1 to 2 times per month. There are no regular night shifts or hazardous on-call rotations.
