What does the day look like?
Your day is in a council office or a private consultancy, 37 to 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. About 35% is checking applications against the local plan, zoning rules, heights, site boundaries and environmental checklists. About 25% is drafting officer reports on small cases and writing Planning Committee minutes, 15% is answering counter and phone queries on permitted rights and submissions, 15% is site visits with a handheld camera and measurement wheel to record streetscapes, privacy impacts and post site notices, and 10% is entering layers and history into ArcGIS and QGIS.
Tools are ArcGIS, QGIS, Idox Uniform, DEF Software, Civica, Accela, PlanX, AutoCAD, Adobe InDesign, Google Earth Pro and digital laser distance meters. You stay late for committee on 1 to 2 evenings per month until 21:00. No shifts, no nights, no on-call rota. Designing future cities is under 5% of the work; 95% is reading zoning text, checking boundaries and writing balance reports.
