What does the day look like?
An architect or engineer hands you sketches, site dimensions, and redline markups, and you turn them into exact working drawings in Autodesk Revit or AutoCAD: 1:50 and 1:20 details such as wall-floor junctions, insulation layers, roof flashings, door and window schedules, and stair geometry. You apply the office drawing standard for layers, line weights, dimensions, hatches, and title blocks, then check dimensions against code for corridor widths, stair risers, and ceiling clearances. Then you export, plot, and organize the DWG, IFC, and PDF sets for planning and tender submission. You also visit shells and lots with a laser measure such as Leica Disto and redraw as-built conditions in CAD.
The split is 10% creative design and model work, 50% redline revisions to walls, doors, and schedules, 25% clash detection, layer checks, sheet setup, and dimensioning, and 15% printing, PDF collation, file upkeep, and meetings. Tools are AutoCAD, BricsCAD, Revit, Graphisoft Archicad, Vectorworks, Bluebeam Revu, Adobe Acrobat DC, Autodesk ReCap, and dual monitors. Hours are 38 to 40 per week, 08:30 to 17:30 or 09:00 to 18:00, Monday to Friday. There are no night shifts and no on-call duty, with overtime common before tender and council deadlines.
