What does the day look like?
You work in AutoCAD, Rhino 3D with Grasshopper, SketchUp, QGIS, ArcGIS Pro, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Enscape, Lumion and V-Ray. Your tasks are massing models, envelope testing, floor-area ratio calculations, 2D masterplan site plans, street cross-sections and circulation diagrams, figures and diagrams for Design and Access Statements (DAS) or local planning applications, cleaning GIS base maps, plotting public transport accessibility layers, organizing constraints plans, and post-processing 3D renders into marketing layouts and client presentations.
15% of the day is creative visioning and sketching future cities, 85% is revising street widths to highway engineering manuals, formatting PDF booklets, recalculating unit mixes in Excel and fixing CAD line weights. Hours are 09:00 to 18:00, 40 hours per week. There are no night shifts or on-call duties, but project submission deadlines and municipal plan submission dates routinely trigger unpaid overtime in private studios.
