What does the day look like?
You lead a team of 10 to 15 planners, allocate caseloads and sign off decisions. You determine complex and major applications under delegated powers, clear committee reports, present at Planning Committee, give expert evidence at appeal hearings and public inquiries, run pre-application meetings with developers, negotiate Section 106 and Community Infrastructure Levy contributions, monitor national indicators for speed and quality of decisions, handle complaints and Ombudsman cases, and coach junior officers.
Tools named in the dossier: Idox Uniform or2311, Planning Portal, GIS including ArcGIS and QGIS, Land Registry title plans, Building Information Modelling viewers for major schemes, Microsoft 365 casework dashboards. Hours are 35 to 37 per week, hybrid with 2 days in office in current London adverts, plus evening Planning Committee. No routine night shifts and no on-call rota. The place-making image is 10% to 20% of the day in pre-application advice; 80% to 90% is reports, negotiation, performance data, staff supervision and committee procedure.
