What does the day look like?
You work 37 to 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:30, in an office or remote. There is no routine shift work, no night shifts, no scheduled on-call duty. 1 to 2 evenings per month you attend a public consultation or planning committee hearing.
90% of the day is desk work: you check architect drawings against the local plan, flood risk maps and green belt designations, screen whether a project needs a full EIA, write Environmental Statement chapters and the Non-Technical Summary, commission and audit reports from hydrologists, noise specialists, transport planners and ecologists, and prepare planning submissions. 10% is on site: measuring buffers, site inspections, visual landscape appraisals. Tools are ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, AutoCAD, Autodesk Civil 3D, Idox, DEFRA MAGIC Map and HEC-RAS.
