What does the day look like?
You work 37.5 to 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday. There is no shift work, on-call or night work. You stay late 1 to 2 times per month, 18:00 to 21:00, for a council planning committee meeting or public inquiry.
About 15% to 20% of the day is drawing: master plans, massing studies and zoning layouts for residential and commercial schemes. The other 80% to 85% is checks and paperwork: validating planning permission applications against zoning plans and national guidelines, site appraisals, environmental desktop assessments, density calculations, GIS constraint analysis, planning statements, policy compliance matrices, design and access statements and section 106 briefs, case logging in Idox Uniform, Northgate Planning, Civica or Objective, and running statutory consultations with residents, councillors and statutory consultees such as the Environment Agency and the Highways authority. Tools: ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, AutoCAD, Autodesk Civil 3D, SketchUp, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator.
