What does the day look like?
You work in a community mental health team (CMHT), a crisis resolution and home treatment team (CRHTT), a psychiatric ward, or a local authority statutory team. Your day starts with biopsychosocial assessments: you check housing instability, domestic violence, isolation, money problems, and family dynamics. In the United Kingdom, as an AMHP you make applications for compulsory hospital admission under the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007). Then you run CPA care meetings with psychiatrists, nurses, and occupational therapists, and you write crisis, safeguarding, and discharge plans, plus section 117 aftercare plans that fund accommodation and treatment.
You record everything in SystmOne, EMIS Web, CareFirst, Liquidlogic Adults' System (LAS), MOSAIC, Rio, and Epic Systems, using HoNOS, CAN-M, and FACE tools. A standard community post is 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00. Crisis and AMHP duty teams work a 24/7 rota with 12-hour shifts, weekend shifts, and overnight on-call for statutory assessments. About ~35% of the hours are face-to-face with service users, ~50% are documentation and statutory reporting, and ~15% are meetings, tribunals, and travel.
