What does the day look like?
As a senior social worker, 20% to 30% of your time is high-risk casework: home visits on abuse, neglect or mental health crisis, Section 47 inquiry papers, sworn expert testimony in family court, and MASH meetings with police, doctors and schools.
20% to 25% is supervision of 3 to 6 newly qualified workers, checking and signing off their risk assessments and care plans. 40% to 50% is recording, audit and chronologies in Liquidlogic, Mosaic, SystmOne or CareFirst. The week is 37.5 hours in the United Kingdom and 40 hours in the United States and Australia, usually 09:00 to 17:30, Monday to Friday. Emergency Duty Team rota adds overnight and weekend 12-hour on-call shifts. Newcomers expect 80% to 90% counselling; 70% to 80% is statutory compliance, litigation risk and admin writing.
