What does the day look like?
Staff in this role draft grant proposals, design projects, supervise doctoral researchers and technicians, manage laboratories and budgets, report on ethics and biosafety, analyse data, write manuscripts, and cover seminars or teaching. They work with systems like NIH eRA Commons and ASSIST for United States applications, the EU Funding and Tenders Portal for ERC grants, institutional modules such as Worktribe or Converis, REDCap for clinical data, Python or R for analysis, Prism for biostatistics, and wet-lab instrumentation.
The bench or field work that many imagine takes up a minority of the time; writing, administrative management, mentoring, and compliance occupy well over half of the working week. Hours are typically daytime full-time, with intense deadline peaks before grant calls and manuscript revisions. Wet-lab, clinical, and field posts can require evenings, weekends, and on-call cover for cell cultures, experimental animals, cohorts, or expeditions, whereas purely computational research generally does not.
