What does the day look like?
Your day involves far more governance and documentation than sitting at a laboratory bench in a white coat. Rather than running a single experiment, you lead the entire technical development pipeline. This covers solid-state sciences, formulation development, scalable manufacturing processes for clinical and commercial supply, global regulatory readiness under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards, and Chemistry Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) strategy. You also oversee on-time clinical-supply delivery to global trials, manage multi-million budgets, and mentor large technical teams spanning hundreds or thousands of experts.
Daily work relies on electronic Common Technical Document (eCTD) dossiers, Veeva Vault regulatory systems, Benchling electronic lab notebooks, laboratory information management systems (LIMS), statistical software like SAS and R, and Medidata clinical data tools. Hands-on bench work is a small minority of the week; governance, regulatory writing, and cross-functional decisions with clinical, quality, safety, and commercial units dominate. Hours are full-time days, often running long around major filings and pre-approval inspections. There are no routine night shifts, but you carry on-call responsibility for manufacturing deviations, safety signals, and inspection findings.
