What does the day look like?
The work is full-time employed research inside a principal investigator's group, institute, or company laboratory, focused on an agreed project producing peer-reviewed publications and grant deliverables. Concrete tasks include designing and running experiments or fieldwork, collecting and cleaning data, statistical and computational analysis, drafting journal manuscripts, preparing grant and fellowship applications, presenting at group meetings and conferences, mentoring doctoral students and technicians, and maintaining laboratory records and safety compliance.
Named tools include Python, R, MATLAB, GraphPad Prism, Overleaf and LaTeX, Git for version control, high-performance computing clusters, electronic laboratory notebooks, and instruments such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers and electron microscopes. The bench discovery that people imagine is a minority share of the day; writing papers, revising manuscripts, answering reviewers, documenting data, and applying for grants absorb the larger share. Standard hours are daytime Monday to Friday, but experiments, observatory time, and deadlines make evening and weekend work routine.
