What does the day look like?
Delivering lectures in large amphitheatres accounts for only 15 to 25 percent of an Associate Professor's time. The remaining 75 to 85 percent is dedicated to research, grant writing, and administration, following a standard 40 percent research, 40 percent teaching, and 20 percent institutional service workload model.
Your day involves formulating methodologies, running experiments, performing statistical analyses in R, Python, MATLAB, STATA, or SPSS, and drafting manuscripts in LaTeX or Microsoft Word. You write 50-to-100-page research grant proposals for competitive bodies such as the NSF, Horizon Europe, or DFG. You also manage peer reviews through Editorial Manager and ScholarOne, supervise PhD candidates, configure courses on Canvas, Blackboard, or Moodle, and serve on departmental committees. Work averages 50 to 60 hours per week during term time, routinely requiring evening and weekend hours to meet grant and publication deadlines.
