What does the day look like?
You work a standard 36 to 40 contract hours per week. Direct classroom teaching takes up only 25% to 35% of your time, amounting to 8 to 14 contact hours weekly for lectures, seminars, and laboratory workshops. Another 25% to 30% is spent designing module handbooks, writing exam papers, grading assignments, and managing learning platforms like Canvas, Moodle, and Blackboard.
The remaining 35% to 45% goes to departmental examination boards, accreditation audits, investigating plagiarism via Turnitin, supervising dissertations, and writing research papers. Daily software includes HEMIS, Banner, Oracle Peoplesoft, Microsoft Teams, LaTeX, EndNote, Zotero, and SPSS/R/Python. There are no night shifts, though teaching schedules frequently include evening classes from 18:00 to 21:00 for part-time programmes, and peak marking seasons in winter and summer demand weekend grading.
