What does the day look like?
You work as a conference interpreter in the booth in simultaneous or beside delegates in consecutive, working relay and pivot combinations, preparing with briefing papers, glossaries, UNTERM and IATE. At chief level you take rostering and booth allocation, quality control, mentoring junior interpreters, sitting on recruitment and accreditation panels, and liaising with meeting organisers.
Tools are booth consoles and relay equipment, electronic listening systems, terminology banks and electronic dictionaries, and office and productivity software. Talking in the booth is a small share of the day: at staff level preparation takes a large share, and at chief level management is the majority share with booth turns as the minority. Hours follow the meeting calendar: standard office hours plus evening and overtime during ministerial weeks, summits, and late-running bodies. Night and on-call work is real around crises and high-level weeks, not a year-round roster.
