What does the day look like?
Between 60% and 70% of your shift is administrative and clinical management. You build shift rotas using software like Allocate HealthRoster or Kronos Workforce, audit controlled narcotic stocks via automated cabinets like Pyxis MedStation or Omnicell, lead infection audits, and investigate clinical incidents in Datix. You also run clinical handovers with doctors using the SBAR protocol inside Electronic Health Record systems such as Epic Hyperspace or Cerner Millennium, while mentoring junior nurses.
The remaining 30% to 40% involves direct patient care during acute escalations: coordinating cardiac resuscitation, managing complex IV access, administering blood transfusions, and speaking with distressed family members. You work a 37.5 to 40-hour week on rotating 8-hour or 12.5-hour shifts covering days, nights, and weekends, alongside on-call hospital site duties during emergencies.
