What does the day look like?
The working day splits between the veterinary clinic and rural farm visits. Morning clinic hours run from 08:30 to 11:30 for companion animals (dogs, cats, rabbits), covering vaccinations, microchipping, soft tissue surgery (spays, castrations, dental extractions), and in-house diagnostics using IDEXX Catalyst One, VetScan VS2, ProCyte analyzers, digital radiography, and Mindray Vetus ultrasound. From 12:00 to 17:00, you drive an equipped 4x4 vehicle across farms for bovine transrectal pregnancy scans using IMV Easi-Scan:Go probes, calving assistance, sheep caesarean sections, equine colic assessments, and statutory bovine tuberculosis (TB) skin testing. Evening clinic consultations run from 17:00 to 19:00, ending with entering case logs into Merlin, Teleos, RoboVet, or ezyVet practice software.
Contracts standardise at 40 to 45 hours per week over 4 or 5 days, plus a mandatory out-of-hours rota (1 in 4 to 1 in 6 nights and weekends). Night calls involve midnight calvings or emergency surgeries like canine gastric dilatation-volvulus. Hands-on clinical handling and surgery take 50% to 55% of the day, driving rural routes takes 20% to 25%, and admin takes 15% to 20%. Cuddling healthy animals accounts for under 5%; the core routine involves blood, manure, winter weather, and handling aggressive 600 kg livestock.
