What does the day look like?
A veterinary surgeon works 40 to 55 hours per week. A typical schedule consists of 4 clinical days lasting 10 to 12 hours each, alongside 1 administrative or research day. Emergency on-call duty covers 1 night per week and 1 weekend every 4 to 6 weeks. The morning starts between 08:00 and 10:00 reviewing ICU patients, consulting with pet owners, and examining multi-slice CT, MRI, or fluoroscopy scans. The surgical block runs from 10:00 to 16:00, covering 2 to 4 complex procedures such as tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO), total hip replacement (THR), hemilaminectomy, liver lobectomy, thoracic duct ligation, laparoscopy, or arthroscopy. From 16:00 to 19:00, time is spent updating clients, drafting referral letters, supervising residents, and reviewing biopsy results.
Surgeons use Synthes TPLO saws, Stryker and Hall drills, Karl Storz endoscopy towers, 1.5T MRI scanners, practice software like ezyVet, Cornerstone, and Merlin, and DICOM viewers like Horos and OsiriX. The glamorous part of the job—operating in theatre—takes up only 45% of working hours. The remaining 55% is consumed by diagnostic evaluation, client communication, ward rounds, and administrative reporting.
