What does the day look like?
A small animal veterinarian diagnoses and treats companion animals, primarily dogs and cats, in primary-care clinics, corporate veterinary hospitals, or emergency centres. A typical day involves physical examinations using veterinary stethoscopes such as the 3M Littmann Classic III, taking and interpreting digital radiographs, performing ultrasound scans with devices like the GE Versana or Mindray DP-50Vet, and analysing in-house blood panels on IDEXX Catalyst One and IDEXX ProCyte Dx systems. Surgical work includes routine desexing, foreign-body gastrotomies, wound care, and dental extractions under anaesthesia (propofol, isoflurane). Clinical notes, prescriptions, and billing are documented in software like ezyVet, IDEXX Neo, Cornerstone, or Covetrus Provet Cloud.
Only 20% to 25% of the day consists of calm, hands-on interaction and petting. The remaining 75% to 80% is spent on intense medical charting, handling aggressive or frightened animals, performing surgeries, cleaning dental tartar, managing bodily fluids, navigating financial constraints with anxious pet owners, and administering euthanasia. Full-time schedules run 38 to 44 hours per week across 4 or 5 shifts of 9 to 11 hours, including weekend rotations and 12-hour rotating night shifts in emergency hospitals.
