What does the day look like?
Your day takes place in a multi-disciplinary referral hospital, veterinary teaching university, or specialized private center, handling complex cases sent by primary-care veterinarians. Standard shifts run 10 to 12 hours. Because specialist hospitals operate 24/7, specialists take on-call rotations during nights and weekends for acute spinal compressions, emergency surgery, or critical cardiac cases.
The imagined part of petting animals and simple healing takes up just 10% of the day, as patients are typically severely ill, sedated, or stressed. The remaining 90% consists of reviewing high-resolution ultrasound (GE Vivid, Mindray Vetus) and 64-slice CT or 1.5T MRI scans, managing records in ezyVet or Cornerstone, performing complex surgeries, administering chemotherapy, and conducting emotionally taxing consultations with pet owners.
