What does the day look like?
Only 15% of the working day is spent on control-room diagnostics and physical troubleshooting. The remaining 85% is dedicated to safety compliance, quality assurance reviews under ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001, engineering change packages, formal testing records, cyber-security barrier documentation, and writing Verification and Validation (V&V) reports. Engineers work with safety platforms such as Framatome TELEPERM XS, Westinghouse Common Q, and Siemens SPPA-T3000, engineering tools like MATLAB/Simulink and AutoCAD Electrical, and field devices including neutron flux detectors, RTDs, and PID control loops.
During steady-state operation and design, work follows a standard office schedule of 37 to 40 hours per week. However, during planned refuelling and maintenance outages, which occur every 18 to 24 months and last 30 to 60 days, engineers work rotating 12-hour day and night shifts with mandatory on-call duties. The role involves security checkpoints, background vetting, and wearing anti-contamination PPE in radiological controlled areas.
