What does the day look like?
Your day is spent authoring, reviewing, and defending safety documentation that justifies operating a nuclear facility without unacceptable risk. You write and update sections of the Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (PSAR), Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR), and Periodic Safety Review (PSR). You review engineering change proposals (ECPs) to confirm plant modifications do not invalidate safety boundaries. You use Probabilistic Risk Assessment tools like RiskSpectrum, CAFTA, and SAPHIRE to run Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Event Tree Analysis (ETA) to calculate core damage frequency (CDF) and large early release frequency (LERF). You translate calculation outputs from codes like RELAP5, TRACE, CATHARE, MCNP, SCALE, and CASMO/SIMULATE into regulatory arguments demonstrating compliance with the ALARP principle, and prepare responses to requests for additional information (RAIs) from regulators like the UK ONR, US NRC, or French ASN. Files are managed using Documentum, Teamcenter, and IBM Engineering Requirements Management DOORS.
Only 15% of the day matches what people imagine, such as running reactor transient simulations or analyzing core meltdown scenarios. The remaining 85% is technical documentation, regulatory argumentation, traceability audits, compliance checks, and cross-disciplinary committee meetings. The work follows a schedule of 37 to 40 hours per week in an office. Shift work is non-existent. On-call or weekend duties are rare, occurring only during emergency response drills or critical submission deadlines.
